Jennings & McComber
Named for our maternal grandparents, we are Kara and Andy Lake.
Kara with her earliest cohorts, sisters Kate and Kelly.
Kara ~ aka Jennings
I am a small town girl. My parents moved to Vermont from the suburbs of New Jersey when I was a year old to pursue their dreams of raising a family and having a small cottage business making handmade dolls. I grew up dancing, singing, and performing in my parents' living room. My love for dance sent me to finish my final two years of high school at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, Massachusetts. I later studied musical theatre at Syracuse University and had envisioned myself packing my bags and moving to NYC to pursue an acting career after college like many of my peers. My plans were ungrudgingly and joyfully thwarted when Andy Lake walked into the Weston Playhouse pit orchestra in the summer of 1996. We fell madly in love doing a production of "Crazy for You" and were married in June of 1997.
Together, we have always had dreams of making art. We have played many different kinds of music together over the years in many different settings and contexts, but were always too busy to create anything of our own. In 2013, we were able to begin a new and lifelong dream of creating our own music as a duo and Jennings & McComber was born. We began learning songs we have always loved, playing them in the stairwell of our farmhouse while our children fell asleep. Soon, we began writing our own original songs and performing them in local settings. Our duo is named for our maternal grandmothers.
I am still a small town girl. I love living deep in the Green Mountains of Vermont. I draw my songwriting inspiration from my deep love for God, my husband, family, friends, and the beauty that can be found in this crazy, beautiful, broken world. My mission as a songwriter is to make something beautiful that encourages others on life's journey toward Love.
Andy ~ aka McComber
I (Kara) am taking matters into my own hands. In the interest of telling you something about my amazing husband on this page, I am writing his bio until he has the time!* Andy is not only the other half of the duo Jennings & McComber, but is also a devoted and loving husband and father to six as well as a local business owner as a carpenter and stonemason. New Hampshire born and raised, picking rocks out of the corn fields every spring on his uncle's farm growing up, Andy spent his youth riding his bike over dirt roads, mowing lawns, fishing for horn pout, skating on and swimming in Russell Reservoir, and eating garden fresh juicy tomatoes right off the vine. I have the happy distinction of being the Green Mountain girl that stole him across the border to our Vermont home.
Andy started playing guitar as a boy of 7, sneaking his father's guitar whenever his dad had gone to work. He received a guitar for his next Christmas gift, and he has been playing ever since. Andy played piano and then bass in a few different bands through high school and began at Keene State College on the classical guitar. He soon fell in love with the double bass, and was the very first bass student at the school. He has played many different styles on the bass, including jazz, and is still very addicted to classical music.
Andy is responsible for making the duo Jennings & McComber so interesting and unique, because he plays six different instruments, including guitar, baritone guitar, a 1964 long-neck Gibson banjo, double bass, mandolin, and a small piano accordion that he inherited from his piano teacher grandmother, Barbara.
*I (Andy) am so grateful to Kara for taking matters into her own hands, and so I am leaving things as Kara presented them - except to say that I am determined to live up to all of the kind things that she says about me. I am living my dream, sharing life and music with this gorgeous Green Mountain woman.... & man, can she sing!
